Elgeis's political simulation keeps running thanks to the tireless efforts of a few dedicated souls who spend an inordinate amount of time handling the meta, backend side of things so that players are able to play.
Here you can learn about the teams working behind the scenes to provide the community with the experience many take for granted.
Staff in Elgeis are the ever-vigilant task force assigned to vetting new players before they can join, monitoring conduct in Discord channels, and investigating rulebreaking to ensure a fair experience for everyone. Although everyone can agree generally that rulebreakers ought to be given the boot, Staff are the ones who have to put their foot down and make it happen, regardless of how popular or well-liked a player is.
Owner
GoatWhisperer is the owner of the server, and one of the two people with administrative powers ingame. He founded the server with FlyingGMM and a few others, having a vision of a political simulation which allows firsthand experience of geopolitics. This vision is further fleshed out in the Enrichment page.
Being that he handles most technical duties, and barring sufficient donations is the one who covers the server and domain rents, GoatWhisperer is the final say on server rules and punishments for breaking them. He is responsible for setting policy and ensuring community cohesion in regard to policies set, as well as for managing the technical side of the plugins which shape the Elgeis experience. Along with FlyingGMM, he investigates ingame rule breaking such as x-raying, duping, or combat hacking.
Administrator
FlyingGMM is the head administrator on Elgeis, and as one of the founding members, was instrumental in setting up the foundation the server was based upon. He was the first advocate for opening the server to the public, without which Elgeis wouldn't be what it is today. He is the only person with total administrative powers besides the owner.
FlyingGMM's main affinities are in optimizing server processes and investigating rule breaking. For example, the vetting process as we know it was his creation, and the form and standardized questions have made gaining admission to the server far more organized and attuned to weeding out malicious applicants. His vigilance has unearthed the most rule breaking of anyone on staff, and his experience rooting out problem players helps in deciding how to enforce rules in the future.
Moderator
Grooge64 is the first member of the team not to be a founding member. Invited in one of the first few waves of new members, Grooge64 soon began to help newer players with server management issues as well as with vetting. Taking note of his respect for staff and his helpfulness, not to mention needing another set of hands to process the ever-increasing tide of new players, Grooge64 was invited to the staff team.
Grooge64's main duties pertain to the Discord rather than ingame. He is responsible for processing new players and keeping rule breaking content deleted. Despite mostly serving in the Discord, Grooge64 still plays a vital role in discussing how staff should handle situations regarding ingame rulebreaking, and aids in developing policy going forward.
“Mapping is fundamental to the process of lending order to the world.” - Robert Rundstrum, 1926
Elgeis would be nothing without lines on maps to fight over. Our Cartographers are volunteer drawers of maps the world over, who take great pains to objectively determine each and every international boundary and provide the community with a view of what their world looks like-- sometimes multiple times a day! They are the most unsung heroes of Elgeis, and the fact that they choose to take on this meticulous and herculean task speaks to their love for the community.
CreeperColder
(Current Primary Cartographer)CreeperColder took on the role of cartographer for an extended period of time. During his tenure as primary cartographer, he ensured that maps not only were as accurate as possible, but aesthetically pleasing, taking extra care to draw with thick lines, handwritten-style fonts rearranged to fit the boundaries, and sharp, contrasting colors to give the feel of a "real" map. He also created board game style maps on occasion to further aid imagination and immersion into the world of Elgeis.
Flashy10
(Former Cartographer)Flashy10 took on the mantle of cartography during a time of unprecedented global complexity. In addition to ensuring every one of the 30+ nations on the map is represented accurately, Flashy10 sent out maps after every major international development, even multiple times a day during certain crises, and often compiled them into .gifs on a monthly basis. Flashy's dedication to the ever-growing task before the Cartography team was truly astounding.
MasterInventor
(Former Cartographer/Technical Consult.)A technical expert, MasterInventor took it upon himself to improve mapmaking incredibly by creating a 9 megapixel map through painstakingly stitching together dozens of individual screenshots of the Dynmap. His contributions are still used in maps made today, and the increased resolution has immeasurably improved the ability of smaller areas of the world to be faithfully represented, improving Cartography's ability to include local nuance in maps.
Goomyman77
(Former Cartographer)Goomyman77 was the first non-admin cartographer to take on the challenge of faithfully representing the countries of the world on map. While at this time there were far fewer states to be represented, modern amenities such as Dynmap were not available, so much more investigation and conversation had to be done to elucidate boundaries. As a pioneer, he set the precedents on stylistic choices to use on future maps, and many of these norms have been carried through to the current day.
Note: numerous other community members contribute here and there to maps, both informational and recreational. These members are not forgotten, but here we've chosen to show those few who have gone a step above by giving incredible effort to improving the neverending tedium of mapmaking.
With such a need for individual deliberation and privacy, Elgeis wouldn't function without spinoff servers for individual groups to plan and discuss. These groups are still required to obey the rules of the server, yet staff can't be expected to thoroughly and intimately know all the content of every server. Here enter Affiliated Discord Managers, who are typically the owners (or clerically-inclined higher-ups) of the groups the servers were made for.
Affiliated Discord Managers work with staff to extend rule of law to all affiliated Elgeis discord servers, of which there are almost twenty. They are the designated contact for staff seeking action to be taken in a given server, as well as attempting to keep their members in line with conduct rules and flagging rulebreaking (or intention to do so) up the line to the staff team. A more routine duty they hold is banning players who have been banned from Elgeis as a whole to keep punishments consistent across the community.
As there are nearly twenty affiliated discord managers, and more discords for more groups being created all the time, it'd be infeasible to give an individual rundown of every manager. However, their job is a vital one, and it would be impossible to manage Elgeis's wide breadth of servers without their help.
